Volunteering Opportunities
In partnership with The Harvest Collective and Lick Run CDC, we host volunteer days at the facility, usually on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm. Our next public volunteer days will be held in the spring time. Sign up with our newsletter and see our calendar below to stay up-to-date on all our community events.
This year, we will be planning and building various gardens at the property of the compost facility, Heritage Point. With proper care, these gardens will become food forests and berry fields available for harvest by The Harvest Collective's Green Team members. Becoming a member of the Green Team is open to everyone and brings great benefits to you and your community.
Education & Community Programs
In partnership with The Harvest Collective and Lick Run CDC, we offer educational experiences in composting for youth and adults! Our compost facility is open for field trips or we can visit you to provide a presentation. Our presentations offer lessons on composting, zero-waste, plastic pollution, the importance of local ecology, and hands-on solutions to climate change.
Davey has over a decade of experience in classroom and outdoor ecological education and has a passion for teaching about sustainability. A sliding-scale contribution for a presentation or field trip ensures educators are paid, that our programs are always accessible, and that we can continue to invest in community-owned agriculture.
We've hosted adult and youth groups at the Compost Facility, all of whom left with life-long lessons about the importance of local ecology in our own lives.
Hands-On Learning Experiences
Our Compost Education Trailer is a mobile static aerated compost system. It offers hands-on experiences in learning about how to compost. The trailer is available for 2-3 month-long visits to schools and universities.
The trailer experience teaches:
General information on what composting is.
Proper ratios of carbon and nitrogen sources for making compost.
Passively aerating compost through the use of appropriate technology.
How to monitor the temperature and assess the oxygen and water demands of your compost pile.
The basics of how to set up an off-grid solar array.
How to catch and use rainwater in a rain barrel system.
How to sieve your compost and add it to your garden.
